Daily living support โ formally called Assistance with Daily Life โ is one of the most commonly funded supports in NDIS plans. It covers the personal and household tasks that disability makes harder, and it is delivered by a support worker in your home or out in the community.
This article explains exactly what falls under this support category, how funding works, and what to look for when choosing a provider.
What NDIS category is daily living support under?
Daily living support sits within Core Supports, under the budget line Assistance with Daily Life (support purpose: Daily Activities). In NDIS plans, this is often the largest core support allocation. Funding in this category is flexible โ it can be used across support items within the same core budget.
What is covered under daily living support?
Personal care
Showering, dressing, grooming, oral hygiene, skin care, and toileting assistance.
Meal preparation
Meal planning, grocery shopping assistance, food preparation, and cooking support.
Household tasks
Cleaning, vacuuming, laundry, dishwashing, and general tidying of your living space.
Medication
Medication reminders, assistance with self-administration, and organising dosette boxes.
Morning and evening routines
Support getting ready for the day, getting into bed, and managing sleep routines.
Mobility assistance
Help with transfers, moving around the home, and using mobility aids.
Overnight and active night support
Support worker stays overnight or is available for active support during the night.
Complex care
Higher-needs personal care such as wound management, catheter care, and PEG feeding (where appropriately trained).
What is NOT covered?
Daily living support specifically covers the additional help required because of disability. It does not cover things that any household would pay for regardless of disability โ such as groceries themselves, electricity, or the cost of building modifications (which fall under Capital Supports).
Medical treatment and clinical nursing support are generally funded through health, not the NDIS. Where the line falls can sometimes be unclear โ your support coordinator or Local Area Coordinator can help interpret your plan.
How is daily living support priced?
Providers must charge within the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits (the price guide). Rates differ based on the time of day, day of the week, and the complexity of care:
Lift & Live bills at NDIS price guide rates with no hidden fees. You will always receive a clear invoice that matches the support delivered.
How many hours can you get?
There is no fixed number of hours. Funding is set based on your assessed support needs during your planning meeting with the NDIA. Some participants receive a few hours per week; others with higher needs have daily support or 24-hour coverage. If your current plan does not reflect your actual needs, you can request a plan review.
What should a good support worker do?
- โFollow your documented support plan and respect your preferences
- โMaintain your privacy and dignity at all times
- โCommunicate clearly and check in regularly about how support is going
- โHold a current police check, Working With Children Check, and NDIS Worker Orientation Module certificate
- โWork within their scope โ and refer to other professionals (e.g. nurses) when clinical care is needed
