What is NDIS Respite Care?
Respite care is short-term support that gives the primary carer โ usually a parent, partner, or family member โ a break. It is not a luxury. Carer burnout is real, and the NDIS recognises that carers need regular, planned time off to sustain the support they provide at home.
Despite what the name suggests, the NDIS does not have a single "respite" line item in modern plans. Most in-home respite is drawn from Core Supports โ Assistance with Daily Life (Category 01). Community-based respite (where the participant goes out with a worker) falls under Category 04. Short Term Accommodation (STA) is a distinct funded line for overnight stays away from home.
If you are not sure what your plan covers, call us. We will read your plan with you and work out exactly what respite funding is available โ at no cost to you.
Types of Respite We Offer
In-Home Respite
A worker comes to your home so the primary carer can rest, run errands, or step out. Hours are flexible โ a few hours or a full day.
Overnight Respite
Active overnight or sleepover support so carers can sleep through the night. Available weeknights and weekends.
Weekend Respite
Block bookings across Saturday and Sunday โ for carers who need a full weekend off without worrying about cover.
Planned Holiday Respite
Multi-day cover so families can take a holiday. Book 4+ weeks ahead where possible to secure consistent workers.
Short Term Accommodation (STA)
Overnight stays away from home โ at an STA facility โ for up to 14 days per year as funded in your NDIS plan.
Community-Based Respite
The participant goes out into the community with a worker (outings, social activities) while the carer has time at home.
How NDIS Respite Funding Works
Many families are surprised to find that their plan already has respite funding โ it just is not labelled that way. Here is how it typically breaks down:
- โIn-home respite (worker comes to your home) โ funded from Core Supports Category 01 (Assistance with Daily Life)
- โCommunity-based respite (participant goes out with a worker) โ funded from Category 04 (Community Participation)
- โOvernight and sleepover support โ funded from Category 01 at higher overnight rates under the NDIS Price Guide
- โShort Term Accommodation (STA) โ a separate funded line, usually 14 nights per year, for overnight stays away from home
- โWe bill at NDIS Price Guide rates โ no additional fees, no hidden charges

Frequently Asked Questions โ NDIS Respite Care
My plan does not say "respite" anywhere โ am I still eligible?
Probably yes. NDIS plans have not used the term "respite" since the old funding categories were retired. Most in-home respite is paid from Core Supports โ Assistance with Daily Life (Category 01). We can help you check your plan at no cost.
How quickly can respite start?
Planned respite typically starts within 1โ2 weeks of first contact, depending on scheduling. Emergency respite depends on worker availability โ call to discuss urgent situations.
Can the worker take my loved one out, or do they stay at home?
Either. In-home respite means the worker stays at home with the participant. Community-based respite means they go out together โ to a park, activity, or social group. Both are NDIS-funded.
Do you offer overnight respite?
Yes. We offer active overnight support (worker stays awake) and sleepover shifts (worker is available but sleeps). Let us know which you need โ pricing differs at NDIS rates.
What is Short Term Accommodation (STA) and do you offer it?
STA is funded accommodation away from home โ usually a residential facility โ for up to 14 days per year as a specific NDIS budget line. Yes, we offer STA. Call to discuss placement options.
