What is SIL (Supported Independent Living)?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS-funded support that helps you live in your own home with as much independence as possible. It covers the support workers and day-to-day assistance — help with personal care, meals, cleaning, medication, and building life skills — usually delivered 24/7 or at high intensity, often in a home shared with one or two housemates.
A key point many people miss: SIL funds the support, not the house. SIL pays for the workers; the dwelling itself is funded separately — through private rental, family arrangements, or Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) for those who qualify. You can have SIL in a regular rental home — you do not need SDA housing to receive SIL support.

SIL vs SDA — What is the Difference?
These two are often confused. They are separate NDIS supports and are funded separately:
🤝 SIL — The Support
Supported Independent Living. The workers and daily assistance that help you live in your home. Funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Daily Life. This is what Lift & Live provides.
🏠 SDA — The Housing
Specialist Disability Accommodation. The purpose-built or modified dwelling itself — for participants with extreme functional impairment or very high needs. A separate capital funding line. Not everyone with SIL has SDA.

How SIL Funding Works
SIL funding is built from a roster of care — a quote showing the support hours you need across a typical week:

- ✓Weekday, evening, weekend, and public holiday hours — each at the applicable NDIS Price Guide rate

- ✓Funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Daily Life, assessed by the NDIA against your support needs

What is the difference between SIL and SDA?
SIL (Supported Independent Living) is the support — the workers who help you with daily living in your home. SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) is the housing — a purpose-built or modified dwelling for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. Many participants have SIL without SDA, living in regular rental or family-owned homes. The two are funded as separate line items in your NDIS plan.
How is SIL funded in my NDIS plan?
SIL is funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Daily Life. Funding is based on a "roster of care" — a detailed quote showing how many support hours you need across a typical week, your support ratio (1:1, 1:2, 1:3), and whether overnight support is active or sleepover. Do I need to find housemates myself?
Not necessarily. In shared SIL, support costs are split across housemates, which lowers the cost per person. We can discuss compatible housemate matching based on support needs, routines, and preferences — or support you in an individual arrangement if that suits you better. Call us to talk through options.
How do I get SIL funding added to my plan?
SIL is usually included when an Occupational Therapist or Support Coordinator assesses that you need significant daily support to live independently. Evidence — like an OT functional assessment and a roster of care — is submitted to the NDIA at a planning meeting or plan review. What plan management types do you accept for SIL?
